Polly Diamond is the new Amelia Bedelia for this generation of kids. She loves words and has a magic journal called, Spell, that can make things happen based on what Polly writes down. This is the third in the Polly Diamond series which continues in her 3rd grade school year. She wakes up with her feet on her pillow and as she continues to go about her day she realizes it is a topsy-turvy day. She learns about hyphenated words from her dad and finds that she likes to use them in her writing.

Once she gets to school there are more topsy-turvy things happening including a substitute teacher on a day that Polly was really looking forward to. Polly isn’t so sure about all the changes in her day so she decides to see if she can change them by writing in Spell, her magical journal. When all kinds of chaos happens after she requests pets for some of her classmates, Polly realizes she needs to make sure adjustments to her journal.

Kids looking for more than just a picture book will find the Polly Diamond books to be fast-paced and will enjoy the few illustrations sprinkled throughout. Since Polly loves words, kids will learn all about adjectives, hyphens, similies, and even clichés in this story. Polly has a big imagination and with her magic journal can create all kinds of wild scenarios that will make kids laugh. There are even a couple of book recommendation lists shared in the story for kids to find more reading enjoyment. Be sure to check out all the books in the Polly Diamond series.
