Summer Read-to-Learn

All summer I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them a new interest to learn about. Most of the time these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn how to be better people or learn empathy from fictional stories too.

So, I hope you will stay tuned to these posts. They will always have Summer Read-to-Learn in the title and in the tags. It’s so important to prevent that summer slide with our kids, so I hope you can use these books to keep them reading and learning all summer long. See all the posts, HERE.

Non-Fiction/Board Book

Today is National Donut Day which makes it the perfect day to share this book with you. This fun board book is shaped like a donut, small enough for toddlers to handle, and even has the center cut out just like a donut.

Each page asks kids to figure out the next donut flavor by offering a small hint.

“The next kind is made with a fruit. Can you guess the flavor?”

Kids can look at the donut and guess the flavor. All of us have our favorite donut flavor but of course, the one we want the most is the one made with LOVE and friends to eat them with. My only suggestion is to have some donuts ready for eating when you read this one!

Toddlers will love turning the pages of the book and seeing all the delicious donuts. From glazed to coconut to chocolate to maple, which one is your favorite?

Lea Redmond reveals the extraordinary hiding in the ordinary: a penny, a donut, hand gestures, clouds. Lea creates books, toys, games, and small adventures that invite humans of all ages to be curious, playful, and kind. Visit Lea’s world of wonder at She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Flora Waycott is an artist and illustrator from England and was raised in Japan. She worked in textile design for a number of years, exploring patterns and exciting color palettes, before turning her focus to illustration. She lives in Australia.
