Fiction

May is National Strawberry Month and here in Iowa, June is picking season. There is nothing better than a freshly picked strawberry right from the patch. I love buying several pints and freezing some for those cold winter days when I need a reminder that summer is coming.

Jolie loves strawberries. She loves them so much she wants to grow her very own strawberry patch. In her journal, Jolie plans her dream of growing her own strawberries. In April, she starts plotting out her mission including acting older and handling more responsibilities. She tries growing grass from seeds by watering them and giving them lots of sunshine. Then she realizes it costs money to buy strawberry plants, so she tries selling lemonade to earn money. After proving that she can be responsible, her parents decide to give her a space to plant strawberries.

Along with caring for the strawberries, Jolie shares facts about strawberries. Jolie realizes that growing strawberries are a lot of work, but there are also a lot of rewards. When the season ends, she finds a new fruit that she just might want to start growing.

The pages include the story of Jolie wanting to plant a strawberry patch but also include pages from Jolie’s journal. This makes the reading more fun for kids as they can see themselves in Jolie. Maybe Jolie’s journal and missions will inspire your child to reach for their goal or dream.

The end of the book includes helpful information from the author about various varieties of strawberries to plant, how to handle pests, and where to find U-Pick farms to pick strawberries in your area.
