I received this adorable book in my shipment from Candlewick Press and then after visiting my local Barnes and Noble, it was a featured book at their checkout area. Since it was originally published in the US in 2020, I’m assuming it had a resurgence and new publicity this year. Even though I don’t usually publish reviews on Sunday, since it was St. Patrick’s Day and the day to celebrate all things GREEN, I figured it was the perfect day to share this story with you.

As the mom of a picky eater, I wish I had had this book when our son was young. Our son would eat peanut butter and jelly every day. Little Donkey loves eating grass every day. Even though his mom asks him to eat other things, Little Donkey just wants to eat grass. Grass is his favorite.

When Little Donkey gets thirsty after eating all the green grass, he goes to the pond to get a drink and what does he see? He is all green! He doesn’t want to get in trouble for eating too much grass so he tries to come up with a plan to hide all the green. But, he can’t sneak anything by his mom.

When she encourages him to try other foods, he doesn’t like any of them except…carrots. You can imagine what happens next! This silly story encourages kids to have a well-balanced diet and to maybe realize that it isn’t so great to eat the same things every day. This is a great way to start the conversation about healthy eating with your toddler and encourage them to try new foods, just like Little Donkey. Even though he didn’t like everything he tried, he did find a new favorite food!
