It reminds me of a favorite book from my childhood, “STAND BACK,” SAID THE ELEPHANT, “I’M GOING TO SNEEZE!”
A chimpanzee and a kinkajou (a rainforest animal in the raccoon family) head out for a walk when they come upon a field of buttercup flowers. Kinkajou picks a few and encourages the chimpanzee to smell the flowers. The next thing we know, the chimpanzee is releasing a big sneeze. It’s so big that it creates all kinds of chaos in the neighborhood.
The author uses unique plays on words with the animals that are affected by the chimpansneeze like the elephant who was hit by the kinkajou. While painting the fence, the elephant ended up with her head stuck in the “elefence”. A series of reactions occur because of the chimpansneeze and are silly enough to elicit giggles from the kids. Aaron’s illustrations show complete surprise from the animals who have had quite the upheaval in their day. There is a nice little twist at the end that kids will love as well.
At the end of the book, the author shares a fun list of “cast bios” for all of the characters in the story. Who knows? Maybe there will be more books in this silly series to add to the characters’ resumé.
Aaron Zenz used up forty-nine colored pencils and broke eighty-one pencil tips during the making of The Chimpansneeze. He is the author and illustrator of more than forty-five children’s books.
