I first shared about this devotional when I shared about my Devotional Reads for 2021.

After two months of reading a devotion a day, I can confidently say this is a wonderfully inspirational devotional. Even though I am reading from more than one devotional a day, I find that each one offers me something different to pray about or think about in my day.

This particular devotional is small in size, which is nice. It fits nicely in my hand and the cover is so pretty. I love having it sit out on my table. Each day offers a Bible verse, a devotion related to that verse, and then a simple prayer to close out the reading. Depending on how much you reflect on that day’s reading, it can take you just minutes to read this.

In just two months, there were already six days that spoke to me particularly on that day. I particularly love how Fortner reminds me that I truly am one of His chosen ones. On January 21, she wrote about how God listens to our prayers. She describes Him listening in this way:

He bends down to listen. Imagine…..it’s as if the God of all creation hears that first world of your prayer and says, “Shhhh! My child is speaking.” Then He cups a hand around His ear and bends down low…because He doesn’t want to miss one single, precious word.

As you can imagine from the title, grace is a common theme in the daily devotions. I think it is hard for us, as Christians, to remember, His grace is a promise that isn’t earned but given to us through our faith in Him. She also offers reminders for us to go to Him in times of uncertainty, despair, and when we make mistakes. Talking to him, even after the “Amens” whenever you are feeling discouraged or need to take a breath and reminding us that he is always ready to listen.

If you are new to devotionals, FIVE MINUTES OF GRACE is a great way to ease into the habit of daily readings. Since the devotions are short and applicable to daily life, it becomes easy to keep checking in with God daily through these devotions. There are lined pages at the end of the book for readers to journal thoughts about a specific reading or maybe even to keep track of prayers through the year. It would also make a lovely gift for mother’s day or for a child’s Sunday School teacher.

Tama Fortner is a bestselling writer and ghostwriter with more than 30 titles to her credit, including the bestselling Easter Is Coming!, Indescribable: 100 Devotions About God and Science, Jesus Calling for Kids, and Grace for the Moment for Kids. She lives with her family just outside of Nashville, Tennessee, with her husband, two kids, and an incredibly lazy dog who doubles as a foot warmer.
