I really love reading devotionals but I hadn’t made it a habit until last year. I decided to try reading from one devotional every single day. Instead of reading it in the morning, I read it on my Kindle when I went to bed. The short reading was perfect for me if I was too tired to continue reading a novel and gave me something to think about while drifting off to sleep.

Last year I read SAVOR: Living Abundantly Where You Are, As You Are by Shauna Niequist. I had purchased the eBook, not realizing it was written in a devotional style. So, I decided to try reading it last year and it was the perfect way for me to get into the habit of daily reading. I really enjoyed her short thoughts on life as well as the recipes tucked in amongst the daily readings. When I finished I had nearly 150 highlights and is one I’d like to have a physical copy of to refer back to.

This year, I chose several devotionals to read, two in the morning and two at night. I feel like I can manage this amount of daily reading, and, of course, if I end up reading them all at night or in the morning, that is ok too. I did purposely choose one on my Kindle for the nighttime reading before I drift off to sleep.

JESUS CALLING

Enjoying Peace in His Presence

If you notice in the photo, my copy looks a little different. It has a teal green leather-like cover and is not much bigger than my hand. I have seen many others reading from JESUS CALLING and like the short message with Bible verses to also reference. There are so many versions of this book, find one that works for you. Some are in large print, have the complete Bible verses written out, or have space to take notes. I chose this one for the pretty factor and the size.

FIVE MINUTES OF GRACE

365 Inspirations to Encourage Your Soul Every Day of the Year

This one just came to me towards the end of 2020 for review. I thought the cover was so pretty and in skimming the book, I found I wanted to read more. The readings are short, beginning with a Bible verse, then a message, and a prayer.

LIVE IN GRACE, WALK IN LOVE

A 365-Day Journey

After seeing a fellow Iowa Instagrammer reading from this one in 2020, I wanted to check it out. I have another book by Bob Goff that I have slowly been reading out of, LOVE DOES, and so far have enjoyed the stories and insights he shares. This one will likely be one of my evening reads or if I am home during the day, maybe my lunch-time choice. I purchased my copy through ThriftBooks so it isn’t in perfect shape, but pretty darn close. I love checking their website for books I’m looking for, but for a much lower price, oftentimes as good as new.

THE BUSINESS OF HEAVEN

Daily Readings

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I have never read a C.S. Lewis book. This one was part of a Kindle Deal that I actually got for free with credits after delaying Prime shipping. I thought it was a great way to be introduced to his writing and a devotional I could read on my Kindle. I’ve already read the introduction and have noticed the daily readings are very short. I am excited to read more and see what C.S. Lewis is all about.

I hope that you have chosen something to start your day or end your day with. I love seeing new perspectives and books that offer hope or insights into my struggles. It never fails that often-times, what I read is exactly what I needed to hear on that day.

I’ll have to check those out! I loved my devotion last year, “Daily Acts of Kindness” by the Ruth Experience – three women from Minnesota. This year the one I have selected is fine, but I’m also only five days into it… I also have the Proverbs 31 First 5 App on my phone and read a chapter from the Bible daily through the app.

Thanks for telling me about that one. I looked it up and recognized the cover. I’ll have to add that one to my list for next year! I have the First 5 App too but haven’t used it in awhile.
