Poppy has grown up always performing. Her parents and her whole family are circus performers. Poppy was always learning new tricks or helping them perform theirs in all the shows. She hadn’t known any other life, but Poppy wasn’t happy. She needed a break from all the performing, bright lights, and crowds.

But, even when Poppy was on her break, she still missed the excitement of the shows. She missed the magic, which gave her an idea. Poppy could still be part of the shows but in a new way.

Poppy’s story teaches kids to follow their gut when they dream of something different and that it is okay to tell your parents. Our daughter was really tall for her age and was asked to be on a basketball team during her elementary years. But, as much as we wanted her to continue to play on the team, she just didn’t like it. Instead, she has used those long legs to perform on the dance floor, quite beautifully, and that is okay with us.

I loved how penguins are the characters in this book. The illustrations are fun and the penguins are adorned with silly costumes while performing amazing feats. The color schemes of blue, turquoise, red, yellow, and orange are perfect for having a fun and authentic circus feeling while reading.

Poppy shows readers how to be confident and to ask for what you want even if it might be uncomfortable. Poppy was able to find something even better, more enjoyable, and a better fit for her. Kids who love performing or being the center of attention will find Poppy’s story entertaining and inspiring.
