Fiction

You can’t assume anything in the new children’s book by the prolific author, Laura Gehl. Farmer wakes in the night to some loud Moos from outside, but when he goes outside, he finds a different noise maker. All through the farm, messes are left behind and the story leads you to assume the mess-maker by both the illustration and the typical rhyme, but in turning the page, the reader is surprised to see someone else who made the mess.

Egg all alone, next to a stone.

Who left it there? Are You Aware?

Friends, I just heard that it was a…

In your mind, I’m sure you are thinking, BIRD! But, Gehl has used her comedic writing style to come up with new culprits like a fox who drops her groceries, leaving behind an egg.

Kids and parents will giggle at the scenarios while also being reminded not to assume something without following up to be sure. Even though this is a silly book, it offers an opportunity for parents to have a conversation about what it means to assume something and to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

Really great illustrations show sheepish characters that leave behind messes and having been caught ask for forgiveness…or not, like the dog who has dug a big hole in the ground. Another Laura Gehl winner!
