Former language arts teacher and Iowa author, Norene Paulson writes with compassion and reminds all of us to look out for others who may be struggling.
Nila loves to go thrift shopping with her mom. When she outgrows her jeans or shirts, she likes to find new or like-new items on the racks at the thrift store. On a recent visit to the thrift store, Nila spots a pretty, puffy coat. But, her mom reminds Nila, her current coat fits her just fine and she doesn’t NEED two coats.
Nila can’t stop thinking about that coat but when her friend, Lily, comes to school without a coat, Nila has a different idea about her need for that coat. Nila sees a need and a friend who is struggling and offers a kindness that makes a difference. Kids will resonate with Lily feeling left out for not having a coat (or a lunch or the “cool shoes” or jeans that fit) and with Nila’s giving heart.
The author includes a way for kids to hold a coat drive at their school to make sure that every child is warm at recess. Reading this book and encouraging a food or clothing drive at your school offers a message of love and support for all the families in your district.
There are several events being held in Iowa related to the book launch that include coat drives and fundraisers. Click HERE to see the locations and details. You can also contribute online if you don’t live nearby.
