Fiction

Little Red, the fox, and Hazel, the dormouse, are the best of friends. Fall is their favorite time of year because the colors of fall allow them to have the best games of hide-and-seek as their fur blends into the leaves and trees.

As the weather starts to get colder, Little Red becomes sad, because he knows his days playing with Hazel are coming to an end until Spring arrives. He begs Hazel to stay out in the cold and play, but Hazel reminds him that she just can’t choose to stay awake, her body forces her to sleep during the winter.

The muted colors, the dreamy narration, and Hazel getting sleepy herself will encourage kids to settle in for a good night’s sleep. But, the most important message Hazel reminds Little Red is that she will be back and they will play again. For children that have trouble falling asleep or maybe leaving for a weekend at Grandma and Grandpa’s, this story will remind them that you’ll be there when they wake up or when their time away is over.

I absolutely loved the delicate and soft illustrations of Little Red and Hazel in the woods. The color palette is perfect for fall. I loved that the inside cover and back of the book were illustrated with pawprints and Hazel riding on Little Red’s back. This is definitely a high-quality children’s book that will be a favorite for bedtime reading.
