Summer is here and many families are planning out their road trips whether it is to visit family members or for a family vacation. Our family has taken many road trips across our great country and most of our favorite moments happened on those road trips.
Jane had her summer all planned out. She was planning on lots of screen time watching videos and playing games and hanging out with her friends. But, her parents had a different idea. They were taking their family on a road trip across the United States for the summer. Jane’s brother was excited but Jane was angry. She broke the news to her friends that she wouldn’t be around for the summer and refused to take her eyes off of her device once they left.
As the family travels through National Parks, Jane starts to notice that maybe some of these places are pretty neat. Soon her device isn’t even on the pages. Jane and her brother begin to have fun exploring and soon her device is forgotten.
You’ll find the illustrations familiar because they are done by Jacqueline Rogers of the much-loved Ramona series of books. Rogers shares the beauty of the National Parks and the excitement on the faces. I loved the page showing Old Faithful exploding into the air at Yellowstone. It reminded me of our family standing in that same spot waiting for the geyser to shoot off water.
Whether you are traveling across your state or across the country, by camper, car, or plane, this is a great book to kick off your summer. The end of the book lists cool places to visit in each state including National Parks and other historic sites. Get your kids excited about visiting one of the locations in your state.

Boy, does that sound like a timely story. I think parents and kids could benefit from reading it.
