Egypt is a fascinating county with so much history and culture that you couldn’t possibly fit it all into one book. But National Geographic does a darn good job with this book especially for kids wanting to learn all they can about ancient Egypt. With forty categories, kids can learn about nearly every part of ancient Egypt. Categories include those you would expect like pyramids, famous pharaohs, and sphinxes, as well as types of jobs, farming, food, and pop culture. Each of the categories has fast facts about that category in fact bubbles along with amazing photography. So, kids won’t be overwhelmed by the facts and they are easy to read. Some categories have 10-15 facts while others have 25 to 50 facts.

I found so many facts that I didn’t know and found fascinating. Boat jousting was a popular game played by men in canoes trying to knock their opponent off their canoe with long sticks. If a pharaoh died, the kingdom mourned for 70 days and no feasts or festivals were allowed during that time. Men’s skirts became longer, starting at knee-length and then becoming more fashionable for them to be ankle-length.

Herbert Hoover, the 31st President, was from Iowa. One fact about him I didn’t know was that he named his dog King Tut after King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922, which caused worldwide popularity of King Tut.

The end of the book includes a glossary, a layout of the Tomb of Seti I, and a timeline of Ancient Egypt Civilization. Resources including websites, videos, books, and museums to visit are also included at the end of the book.

Heavy glossy paper, photography that is engaging, and succinct facts make this an interesting and fascinating read for kids, as well as adults. This book would be great for school libraries or homeschooling families or kids interested in learning about history.
