This book is just scary enough, that I might not recommend it for sensitive or easily scared children. But, if they are ready for a laugh with a bit of a shock, then this book might be just the one for them.

This board book features an animal on each two-page spread. The bold-colored background contrasts with the creature on the page and makes it pop. Then there is a fun fold-out that kids can lift to make their mouth open. What they see is likely scary teeth and, oftentimes gross, animals inside the mouth and throat. A frog is full of slimy worms, an octopus has a fish entangled in its neck, and a spider has scary teeth and a mouth full of insects.

There is an opportunity for conversations about what various animals eat, but mostly this is just a fun book for Halloween. A jack-o-lantern and a ghost are even included on the pages. Once the shock value wears off, kids will enjoy lifting the fold-outs and watching the calm animals change to scary ones.
