Non-Fiction

This fabulous series of non-fiction books for children has added another interesting country to its series. If you are like me, I seemed to know only negative things about the country of Cuba. There was much to learn in this short introduction to their culture.

I had no idea that Cuba, an island in the Carribean was such a viable country full of business and industry as well as athletics. Baseball and boxing are two of the countries most popular sports. Roman introduces children to what life would be like if they were living in Havana, Cuba. Children will learn about their families, the schools, the food they would eat, the celebrations they would have and how they have fun. By using Spanish words in the book, children feel a bit more immersed in the culture and can guess what the Spanish word means. Then checking the glossary in the back, they can see if they were correct.

Roman has written another book that I recommend you add to your home or school library, She is a talented writer and never disappoints. Homeschool families and teachers would find these books a great asset to their teaching.

Carole P. Roman is the award-winning author of the Captain No Beard series. Both Captain No Beard-An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate's Life and Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis have received the Kirkus Star of Exceptional Merit. The first book in the series was named to Kirkus Reviews Best 2012. Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis has been named to Kirkus Reviews Best of 2015. Each book in the series has won numerous awards including the NABE Pinnacle Award, IAN Award, Moonbeam Award 2014, National Indie Excellence Award Finalist, Shelf Media Outstanding Series Award, ForeWord Review Five Star and Finalist in the Book of the Year, and Reader's Views Children's Book of the Year 2013.

This book is a good cultural and historical introduction to Cuban life. The story is written for children in the early primary grades. In addition, the book would be very helpful as a standalone reader for use by the local librarian in periodic/weekly readings to students.
