The fourth in the Indigenous Celebration of Nature series focuses on my favorite season, Autumn. Author Kaitlin Curtice shares a note at the beginning of the book stating the importance of the season to the Potawatomi people, which includes the gathering of all the food grown over the summer. Honoring the gifts of Mother Earth and their Creator, as well as enjoying the beauty of the fall colors, is what this book is about.

Bo, a young Potawatomi boy, notices the season of harvest has arrived. At school, he learns about the word abundance. He thinks about the various things that are in abundance at this time of year: falling leaves, harvested food, and love from Creator and Mother Earth. Bo’s school is doing a project for their autumn festival. As he thinks of the word abundance, he worries about those who don’t have abundant pantries or habitats to prepare for winter.

As the first day of autumn brings cooler October days, Bo and his friends continue working on their secret project for the autumn festival. Their Abundance Club reminds their community that everyone can contribute while honoring Mother Earth’s amazing gifts, which are in abundance for everyone to enjoy.

Kids will learn about Indigenous culture and may desire to have their own celebration of autumn. After reading, I imagine kids being inspired to create their own special project to honor the season. The illustrations celebrate the beauty of Fall while also showing Bo’s family and friends of diverse backgrounds. Hayrack rides and bonfires are some of the favorite Fall activities here in the Midwest, and Bo celebrated in the same ways with his family. Read this as your family welcomes the coming of autumn in all its abundance.
