All summer, I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that interest them or offer something new to learn about. Most of the time, these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too. I believe reading over the summer is so important, and keeping kids interested in reading by finding relevant books about topics that they are interested in is very important. Kids should read at least 20 minutes every day, and I hope that these books offer you ideas to keep your kids reading and learning all summer.

Taro Gomi’s books are silly yet also teach about words, animals, or life lessons. Kids have fun reading and looking at the illustrations and won’t even realize they’re learning at the same time. A book full of verbs explores all the things a kid can do or think about doing. Each page spread includes kids doing things at school, at the farm, at the pool, or at the amusement park. Then surrounding the picture are all kinds of verbs.
Parents can read the verb, and kids can look for that action on the page, such as “catch” and looking for kids playing catch. Each verb is numbered, and the number corresponds to the action on the page, so if your child can’t find it or doesn’t know what the verb means, they can match up the numbers.
The verbs include simple ones that kids might use every day, like read, help, or run, and more difficult ones that might need some explanation, such as stroll, scatter, prepare, and submerge. Reading this book with your child will quickly expand their vocabulary and offer a great way to prepare them for school.
