Summer Read to Learn 2026

All summer, I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that interest them or offer something new to learn about. Most of the time, these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too. I believe reading over the summer is so important, and keeping kids interested in reading by finding relevant books about topics that they are interested in is very important. Kids should read at least 20 minutes every day, and I hope that these books offer you ideas to keep your kids reading and learning all summer.

I hope you will stay tuned to these posts. They will always have Summer Read-to-Learn in the title and will be tagged in the post. There will be books on all kinds of topics kids love to read and learn about. Be sure to stop by each week to see what book I’m sharing as part of my Summer Read-to-Learn series.

CHARTS FOR BABIES
By: Michelle Rial
Published: April 7, 2026
Publisher: Abrams Appleseed
Non-Fiction

Rial uses all kinds of charts to explain new concepts to babies and toddlers. In a Venn diagram, we see hello and goodbye with a wave in the shared circle, meaning a wave can mean both. Other charts include pie charts, spiral graphs, scatter plots, timelines, and more.

With a rhyming scheme, Rial explores concepts like big and small, short and tall, straight and curly, and quick and slow. Hand-drawn, doodle-like illustrations are adorable and offer simple ideas for important concepts. The background page colors flow in a rainbow pattern for another opportunity to learn colors. Soon, your child will understand colors, shapes, directions, relationships, and opposites.

Michelle Rial is a graphic designer who makes charts. Named by Vulture as one of “9 of the Funniest Cartoonists and Illustrators on Instagram,” she is the author and illustrator of the books Am I Overthinking This? and Maybe This Will Help. The New YorkerOprah Daily, USA TodayWired, and more have featured her work.
