It can certainly feel intimidating to write your memoir. But writing in small chunks of time with prompts to guide you in a journaling format might make the task feel more like a journey through time. As a Mom, I assume our children know my life story, but as I read through the prompts on the pages of MY MOM’S STORY, I realized there are many things I’ve never told our kids about my life. Maybe that is the case for you, too. Or you want to know some of your mom’s stories before she isn’t here to ask about them anymore. This journal is the perfect gift to give your mom, grandma, best friend, sister, or even ask your kids to get one for you.

Many of the pages encourage the writer to include recipes, photographs, or their own mementos, like a ticket stub or letters. The pages offer spaces for writing, or you could choose to answer them in a document and then print and paste them into the journal. The prompts offer you to reflect on fun memories from childhood, your college and dating years, being pregnant with your kids, and through midlife and later years. This is a journal you could even give to a brand-new mom who can then work on it and gift it to her child many years later. Writing in the journal as you are going through the years might be a perfect way to keep track of a lifetime of memories.

When I received the journal for this review, I thought I might save it as a gift. But, after looking through it, I plan to keep it to write in myself as a gift to our children and grandchildren someday. Many of the journal prompts reminded me of stories I want to share, like writing about a favorite teacher, what I would tell my 17-year-old self, describing my first apartment in my 20s, and how I felt when I learned I’d be a parent. There is also a whole section on being a grandparent that I can’t wait to fill out someday!

This hardcover book will become a keepsake for generations to read and enjoy. The introduction offers encouragement to start writing, while not worrying about perfection, and explains why sharing your story matters, including the health benefits of writing down your memories. The prompts encourage you to think of the people and places that influenced your life (good and bad), the special moments and memories, your highs and lows in life, and your personal reflections. There are no rules; just start writing. Once you start, the memories will come to you.
