Edie feels like every day she does the same thing. She practices writing her alphabet, helps her mom tidy up, and eats a snack. Every day feels boring. Edie’s mom teaches her how to make every day special by explaining the word “ritual”.

As Edie and her mom go throughout the day, her mom explains how to make each part of the day special. They begin the day by opening the windows and letting in the fresh air. Then Mom lights a candle so they can smell something wonderful while thinking of something they are grateful for that morning. As they continue with their tasks for the day, they find ways to make each chore and meal special.

Through the magic of a ritual, Edie realizes that each day can be special just by adding love, joy, and gratitude to their days. This story of a mom and her daughters was a reminder to me to find joy in the most menial of my own tasks. As I fold laundry, I can be thankful our family has clothes to wear, or I can look back on a special memory while I was wearing the shirt and smile. While sweeping the floor, I can appreciate the mess made by my great-nephews who were visiting and remember the fun we had together.

The concept of a ritual can be helpful for kids who struggle with mornings or bedtimes. Adding a special touch to bedtime or breakfast can make each day special and full of joy.
