THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn’t simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life’s ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side.

I’m not really a “dog person” and am not really interested in racing, so I wasn’t sure I would like this book. But, it kept popping up on every “Must Read” list I had seen, so we decided to make it our book club read for this month and I am so glad we did.  I can’t wait to hear everyone’s take on it this evening.
This really is a very touching story and I loved that it was narrated by Enzo, the dog. I don’t think this story would have worked if it wasn’t told from his perspective. There were so many facets to this story and lots of things going on, but it all flowed well and keep you turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. I actually enjoyed the racing parts of the story and learned a lot about it.

After reading this, you won’t look at dogs the same way and you will appreciate all your human abilities!
I gave this 4 out of 5 stars.
