Matthew doesn’t understand how his family can celebrate Christmas in California. They are moving there and leaving behind the changing of seasons including raking leaves and snow at Christmas.

Matthew doesn’t like his new school, his new church, or his new neighborhood. The only thing that makes him happy is his dog, Jasper. His sister Lucy is super excited to pick out their Christmas tree and even wanted to choose a pink one. Thankfully, his dad didn’t allow that.

Lucy is excited to celebrate their first Christmas in California and even volunteers their family to be the live nativity at church on Christmas eve. Matthew doesn’t think things can get worse until one day at the park, Jasper runs after a squirrel and disappears. Matthew is convinced there will not be any miracles at Christmas this year.

The illustrations fill the page and show the personalities and emotions of the family members. This picture book focuses on what you need to make a place feel like home, just your family and your faith. I appreciated Matthew’s honest feelings about being uprooted from everything he knew and his adjustment to his new home. Change isn’t easy for everyone. Matthew’s realistic feelings and frustration with everything that is new and different is relatable.

If you are looking for new Christmas books to read during the holiday season, this is an excellent choice to add to your collection.
